One of the things we like to know before moving a customer is whether there were any particularly difficult items to get into their current property. Maybe the bed had to go through the window; or the sofa’s feet had to come off for it to be able to get through the door frame; or perhaps the fridge was too big for the doorway.

If your previous removal company didn’t mention the items they had difficulty with when they moved you into your home, consider your items’ weight, fragility and size and tell your next removal company. This information helps the removal team come prepared with the adequate tools as well as allowing enough time to dismantle and remove the specific items to get you to your new home as soon as possible.

Items to consider:

Pianos

Sofas

American Fridge-Freezers

Beds

Tall wardrobes

Safes

Antiques

China/crystal/glass-ware

Mirrors

Paintings (especially oil paintings)

Heavy potted plants

Large concrete garden ornaments

Books are one of the quickest and simplest items to pack – assuming you don’t own a large home library – as you don’t need to be too fussed about their fragility, but do keep in mind their weight. The important rule is not to pack the box too heavy for your own strength. Remember that 10 kids’ books may be lighter than 2 encyclopedias, so assess each box individually as you go.

The following is a step-by-step guide to packing a box of books.

Step 1: Seal the bottom of the box well: twice along the closing flaps and over the side corners to ensure the weight doesn’t fall through.

Step 2: Line the bottom of the box with paper to protect the books from the box flaps. If the books are more delicate, you can add a layer of bubble wrap.

Step 3: With the spines up, pack the books along the wall of the box, or as best you can fit them in if their shapes are not similar. Ensure the weight is evenly distributed. Scrunch up more paper to fill in the gaps.

Step 4: Place a layer of paper over the spines.

Step 5: Insert a layer of scrunched up paper. (If your box is shorter than our preferred boxes, you may only be able to accommodate one layer of books, in which case you can skip to step 8. Our boxes can accommodate 2 layers of regular-sized books.)

Step 6: Repeat step 3.

Step 7: Repeat steps 4 and 5. The scrunched up paper at the top is to close up any air gaps before sealing to ensure the box is sturdy enough to take the weight of any other boxes that may be loaded on top of it.

Step 8: Seal the box with tape over the long flaps and short sides – as you’ve done with the bottom – and label it.

If you’re trying to save money on your move, the best place to start is by doing your own packing. Generally, the cost of packing a home is one-third of the overall moving costs. If you find you’re not up to the task (and believe me, there’s no shame in admitting it because it can be quite overwhelming) you can always decide to do only a portion of the packing. Should you go this route it’s important to understand which items will actually make a difference – i.e. the difficult items.

For example, in the average 2-bedroom flat, we estimate that 60 boxes will be needed (excluding wardrobe boxes). Usually, 20-30 boxes will be used in the kitchen-dining room alone and the other 30 boxes will be divided amongst the remaining rooms. On average, one of our men would spend 10 hours packing the kitchen-diner and 2-3 hours with the rest of the rooms. This is due to the kitchen items being fragile and requiring more care and attention with individual wrapping, compared to the ‘easier’ items from the other rooms – such as books, DVDs and general items – which are quicker to pack owing to their standard and robust shapes. As you can see, even though both sections have the same amount of designated boxes, they differ in the amount of work required to complete them.

In the business of removals, we’ve found that preparation is fundamental. Phone surveys and site surveys help us put together the best plan for moving our customers from one property to another; the materials and man power are specific to each job, with additional supplies packed on to the vans – just in case – and a spare man on standby should the need arise.

Because we never know when we might be called upon to drive 200 miles out of London expecting to collect boxes of books, clothes and a filing cabinet and end up having to deliver a motorbike, 9-foot combustor and a giant stuffed turtle.

Being far from base made things a little harder for our guys. But even though the job had changed, our men were prepared with adequate materials for wrapping, protecting and securing the items inside the van for delivery back to London.

No matter how many moves, surveys, estimates and phone calls I’ve done over the years related to this job, I am still surprised when clients are shocked by how much their moves cost.

Beyond the fact that people forget how much they actually have in their homes, they don’t realise how long it takes to pack everything; how running stairs adds to the labour over time; how an American fridge freezer requires 4 men to move it even though the rest of your move may only require two men.

Moving costs are directly proportional to volume and distance. Keep those two factors low and you’ll keep the costs low.

As part of her initiation into the company, Amber today took part in a BNI meeting presentation. The BNI provides a structured business environment in which local business people can get together to network, learn valuable new marketing skills and develop the strong personal relationships that lead to trust. Consequently this generates significant business for it’s members, an opportunity which the Amber Moves team makes full use of. It was into this, and a room full of 30 + people, that Amber was to make her debut. In preparation for the meeting Andrew and Amber had created a song to wow; they wanted to catch everyone’s attention and make Amber Moves a memorable company, and in this they succeeded! To the tune of “La Bamba” the duo sang “Call, call Amber” with verses that let everyone know what the company did. Despite technical difficulties they were able to carry on acapella and this energetic and exciting presentation even won the morning meeting’s cup prize.

Nowadays everyone wants to help the earth, recycle and do their bit to stop wasting in every day life. We at Amber Moves are no different! Being in the line of removals, we find a lot of people who need/want to dispose of unwanted items and we are happy to help them find a green way of doing this. Often it’s very simple; finding a new home for items isn’t too hard, either through auctions, charity or friends, and we even take things to our nearest recycling plant as much as we can to avoid dumping and pollution. Disposing of goods through Amber Moves is easy and efficient, giving the hard work to us, taking a weight off your mind and load off your hands.

Turn the Red light on waste and go Green through Amber!

Moving pet fish from one home to another is a complicated process which you can read about here. To put it simply, the only part we will play is in transporting the empty aquarium from one property to another – everything else is up to you. We cannot take responsibility for the life of your pet, simple as that. Due to the complexity of such a move, it will take a lot of organising on your part and help from your local aquatic retailer.

For most people, pets are considered part of the family. If you’re avoiding moving home because you’re afraid your dog or cat will run back to your old home, or you’d like to make the move as stress-free for your pet as possible, we’ve found some great tips here which we’ve summarised.

Confine them to one room while the removal men carry out their job to reduce chances of pets running to a place of safety (like the neighbour’s).

Familiar toys and bedding (with all its old smells) in the new home will help ease into the unfamiliar setting.

Give your pets plenty of attention and reassurance before, during and after the move.

Following a move, keep your pets indoors – our outdoors under supervision – for a week to prevent them from running back to the old home.

On moving day, to avoid accidents during the drive to the new home, do not feed your pets 3 hours before leaving the old property.

Placing your pet in a kennel or cattery for a few days while the move is carried out may be an option, as well as sedation if your vet recommends it.

Being territorial animals, cats and dogs may need to mark their territory at the new property. Cats may get into fights so check it regularly for wounds.

Stick to the routines you had in your old home to help your pets settle in easier.

So the kids have moved out and you and your spouse still live in the 4-bedroom family home? For most people, such a large property for only two people to live in it is an unnecessary expense. Why not downsize to a two-bedroom home? With fewer tenants living in the property, there will be no need for all the furniture your home needed before. Large items like beds, sofas and wardrobes can go or be passed on to their respective previous owners, along with linen, old clothes and towels. Remember that you don’t need to be the storage property for your family’s old things.

So you arrive in your new home and you unwrap your furniture and boxes to find, upon closer inspection, that your books don’t look as new as you remember them or your dining chair has a scratch you can’t account for. So who dunnit? Was it the removal man in the dining room with a Stanley knife? Or was it your mate in the living room with a cup of coffee? Even when removal companies are being as careful as possible, accidents still happen. It’s important to review your property before it’s taken away to your new home because chances are you’ve forgotten why you never use that vase in the back of the cabinet – it’s cracked! Sometimes, you don’t realise the state of your items.

Our removal men take note of items in less than perfect condition so that if damage is mentioned later, we have a better idea of where the fault lies. It would serve you well to do the same, especially when it comes to those particularly special items.

Today, my daughter Amber – the company’s namesake – moves back to uni. As a company that specialises in big moves over short distances, we don’t normally take on student moves mostly because their volume is too small to warrant a 3.5 tonne van to do the job. We normally recommend that these small moves over larger distances – like my daughter studying 2 hours away – use a man and van service which tends to work out cheaper. But my daughter is the exception: we’re giving her the mate’s rate!

Over the years, we’ve done several moves for Brit Sports Tours – a company which takes care of the travel and logistical arrangements for several international teams. In the past we’ve only been asked to do internal moves at their offices but on the weekend of the Olympics closing ceremony, we were contacted by them to help the Russian Olympic team get to the airport. Guess they needed help with all the weight they’d gained – 82 medals of gold, silver and bronze.

A new home should be the chance for a new beginning. The option to get rid of those knick-knacks you bought at the market that you thought were really cute but added nothing to the overall ambiance of the room. The opportunity to go through your closet and pass down the clothes that don’t fit that well any more; to sift through your twenty pairs of jeans and realise that, really, you only wear 3 of them; and to throw out those worn socks and broken shoes that you’d be embarrassed to wear in public. Then you’ll find you don’t even need that much furniture because you don’t need a place to store all those items you’ve gotten rid of.

For tackling this task, you need to ask yourself:

Do I love it? Is it beautiful? Does it make me happy?

Do I need it? If rarely, will it be easy to replace it when I do?

Am I holding on to it for someone else?

Will I feel guilty if I got rid of it?

The delight of decluttering is an emotional journey. It’s about letting go of things you can do without and the freedom of starting over in a new, clutter-free home.

Moving to a smaller place and have no space for everything that was in your home, like your pets or plants? Sorry, but anything that has a pulse, requires oxygen or can expire cannot be put into storage. While you try to find a bigger place for all of you to fit in, try to find a safe and happy home for your pets with family or friends; ask a neighbour to look after your plants if you truly can’t bear to leave them at the old property; and use up any foodstuffs by the time move day comes or donate them to the needy.

Just because the box is big enough, it doesn’t mean you have to fill it up. Packing boxes to their maximum capacity is not a good idea when it comes to heavy items like books, paperwork and kitchenware. It’s best to limit these items to a single layer in smaller boxes and filling the gaps with scrunched up paper to strengthen the box for stacking. Overloading boxes can lead to damage to the box itself and physical harm to the carrier.

Most moves only go between two addresses but when it comes to moves involving a third – and even forth – address, it’s important to label. Not only should you label the boxes by their contents or which rooms they come from, but you should also add its destination if there is more than one possibility. Coloured stickers which represent different addresses, or simply labelling boxes with a marker are ways to achieve this.

The storage warehouse has two sections to it. One where 20ft long steel containers are kept and stacked on top of each other with a crane. The other is where 250cuft and 350cuft wooden boxes are kept and stacked on top of each other with a forklift. Imagine a row of 20 containers, and then imagine another 14 rows behind the first. Now imagine that these containers are all stacked 4 high. Each container is numbered and each one belongs to a different person. How do you keep track of which container belongs to each person? And how do you keep track of where each container is because it’s not easy to look through a thousand containers just to find one. So you have to use a sophisticated computer program that works in conjunction with the crane to keep track of where each container is at any point in time.

Storage is used when a customer needs to move out of a property because they have sold it or the lease has concluded, but they have not established a property to move in to yet. Alternatively, a property owner may be conducting refurbishments or decorating a part of their property and require that particular area to be cleared for a short period. Similarly, a family may be having a large party where they require additional space for their guests and so have items removed to store for a weekend. Sometimes landlords store furniture that is not required by their tenants for the duration of the let.

Allocating a removal crew is one of the most important decisions to take when planning out a move. Firstly, you have to supply enough men to handle the volume correctly. The general rule of thumb is 1 man for every 500 cubic feet. The aim is to be able to load up the van in approximately 4 hours. The second consideration is whether particular skills are required on a move such as being able to dismantle complex furniture or wrap fragile items.

If possible, it is preferable to avoid dismantling as this adds time to the job. However, sometimes dismantling is an absolute necessity in situations where a particular piece of furniture is not able to be removed from a room, taken up or down a stairway or through a doorway.

The importance of having a rest should not be underestimated. Removals is hard physical labour and beyond the mandatory one day off in seven or two days in fourteen, the men should be given time for their bodies to recover from the exertion of carrying heavy boxes and furniture up and down flights of stairs. As fatigue starts to set in, mistakes start being made. Tripping up or down the stairs is more likely; the chances of dropping a box increase and the odds of forgetting something on the van are raised. To protect our men without whom we could not continue to work and to provide the best service for our customers, we do our best to give our men enough time to rest and recover for the next move.

The level of traffic to be found on the route that has been planned must be taken into consideration. This will affect the time taken for the journey. Where possible, an earlier start is preferred. If the travel to the collection location can be done before heavy traffic sets in, then the loading of the van can happen during rush hour, allowing the travel to the delivery location to happen during the next light traffic cycle. Staying slightly out of phase with heavy traffic flows helps to reduce the time taken for the overall job.

Today we moved a customer from Harlesden to Oxford and we started at 7am. This customer lived above some shops and starting early allowed us to vacate the area before the morning traffic set in. This meant that we caused less of a disturbance than we would have if we’d started an hour later and the trip up to Oxford was also a lot quicker.

One of the most important aspects to manage in a removal is the location of the van. The distance between the van and the furniture that needs to be loaded into it must be reduced to a minimum. Every step is an opportunity for an item to be dropped and so, to limit the potential for damage to occur, we have to limit the distance that items need to be carried.

Today we have a particularly awkward situation to deal with. We are moving a customer from a mansion block in Maida Vale that has a driveway. You’d think that this is ideal, but the other tenants will need to be able to use the driveway as well. So we will have to lock up the van and drive around the block every time someone needs to leave or enter. “Why don’t you park in the road?” you might say, but there is a bus stop and red lines all the way along the block. If we tried to find a place to park where we could leave the vans for the duration, then we would have to park two blocks away. So you see, it’s all about finding the balance between parking as close as possible, but also being aware of the neighbours and being considerate towards them.

<img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1264" title="Parking" src="http://www.ambermoves.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Parking.jpg" alt="Parking Lot with cars queuing to get as close to the shopfront as possible.
